T O P I C R E V I E WJacques van OeneNext ISS flight named DELTA6 November 2003The Dutch Ministers of Economical Affairs and of Education, Culture andScience have announced the mission name of the next Soyuz flight to theInternational Space Station, which has Dutch ESA astronaut André Kuipersserving as flight engineer. This mission has been christened 'DELTA'.Flanked by Kuipers and ESA's Director of Human Spaceflight, Mr JörgFeustel-Büechl, on Tuesday Ministers Brinkhorst and Van der Hoeven unveiledthe mission logo and also announced the experiments to be performed byKuipers during his stay on board the International Space Station (ISS).Kuipers will launch on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in April 2004 to spendmore than a week on ISS. While there he will carry out an extensiveprogramme of scientific, technological and educational experiments as partof the DELTA mission. These experiments are sponsored by Dutch Ministriesand therefore have a Dutch character.The mission name DELTA refers to the experiments to be performed during theflight. DELTA is the acronym for "Dutch Expedition for Life science,Technology and Atmospheric research". It also refers to the Delta Works, thenetwork of dykes and dams that protect the Netherlands province of Zeelandfrom sea flooding.During the press conference it was explained that Kuipers would performexperiments in the areas of biology, medical science, technology, physicsand Earth observation.Special attention will be given to educational activities during the flight.The Minister of Education, Culture and Science announced a specialexperiment called "Seeds in Space". School children on Earth and Kuipers inspace will simultaneously grow the same species of lettuce. The questionthis experiment seeks to answer whether the lettuce's growth will be in thedirection of light or forced by gravity.ESA has also organised a Dutch website project that will allow pupils ofselected schools to chat with Kuipers by radio during his flight.Mission DELTA will be overseen by ESA and is made possible by funding of theDutch Ministries of Economical Affairs and of Education, Culture andScience.---------------------Jacques :-)Editor: www.spacepatches.info Jacques van OeneThe second Dutch Astronaut to fly in space, André Kuipers, held a "private" lecture, organized by a Dutch newspaper, at ESA/ESTEC's visitors center, Space Expo, in Noordwijk the Netherlands yesterday. He talked about his training in Star City and his upcomming flight to ISS as a member of the Soyuz TMA-4 crew. Jacques van OeneNo, it did not.....The event began on 20:00 until 22:45.....There were 100 people who won a ticket from the Algemeen Dagblad, they were the only ones who got in....Yes I was one of those 100, Lucky me :-))). What I heard is they had some 3000 request to be there....Andre told me that at the end of the month, he will be in Noordwijk, at ESTEC, then he will talk about his experiments and the winner of the student competition will be announced.He will be there together with his back-up (Thiele) and Tokarev (his commander) he was not sure if McArthur will be there also...I think that this will be a press event...When I hear more I will let you know.....-------------------Jacques :-)Editor: www.spacepatches.info

There were 100 people who won a ticket from the Algemeen Dagblad, they were the only ones who got in....Yes I was one of those 100, Lucky me :-))). What I heard is they had some 3000 request to be there....

He will be there together with his back-up (Thiele) and Tokarev (his commander) he was not sure if McArthur will be there also...I think that this will be a press event...When I hear more I will let you know.....
